The Minister of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, Prof. Palamagamba John Kabudi, has directed the Permanent Secretary, Gerson Msigwa, and relevant stakeholders to expedite the registration of the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium with World Athletics.
Prof. Kabudi issued the directive on December 12, 2024, during his inaugural tour of institutions under his ministry following his recent appointment by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
His visit included an inspection of the ongoing renovation works at the stadium.
The minister emphasized that registering the stadium would elevate its status, positioning it as a leading athletics facility in East and Central Africa.
“With the installation of first-class turf, the stadium is now at a standard that supports international recognition. This effort is not just about renovations but about raising the profile of our facility to reflect the growing importance of East and Central Africa in sports,” he said.
Commenting on the progress of renovations, Prof. Kabudi expressed overall satisfaction but noted the need for improvements in certain areas. He issued directives to accelerate the completion of the project to meet upcoming deadlines.
The Benjamin Mkapa Stadium is expected to play a pivotal role as Tanzania prepares to host the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Prof. Kabudi stressed that the renovations must adhere to international standards to satisfy inspectors assessing the country's readiness to host these prestigious events.
He also commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for prioritizing the project and allocating the necessary funds. “The remaining task is for all involved parties to take responsibility and complete the renovations promptly to meet the required standards,” he said.
The improvements to the stadium aim to boost Tanzania’s capacity to host high-profile regional and international sports events, enhancing its reputation as a hub for athletics in Africa.
