By Adonis Byemelwa

Shinyanga–President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced the passing of Lawrence Mafuru, the Executive Secretary of Tanzania's Planning Commission, who died on November 9, 2024, at Apollo Hospital in India. Mafuru, who had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness, succumbed while hospitalized abroad, leaving the nation in mourning.

In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), President Hassan described Mafuru as a dedicated and visionary leader, highlighting his "exemplary service, diligence, and creative approach" in various government roles.

The loss has not only left a gap in the country’s development efforts but also raised concerns regarding the future leadership of key government agencies, especially the Planning Commission, as the country moves toward its Vision 2050 goals.

Mafuru’s death has profound implications for both the government’s strategic planning and the ongoing implementation of Tanzania’s long-term development projects.

As a respected financial expert with over 20 years of experience in banking, investment, and government policy, Mafuru’s leadership has been pivotal in shaping critical policies and guiding the nation’s economic trajectory.

His departure leaves a significant void, with the government now tasked with finding a successor who can build upon his legacy while continuing the momentum of Tanzania's Vision 2050.

Mafuru’s contributions spanned both the private and public sectors, having served in numerous influential roles throughout his career.

His expertise, particularly in financial markets, was honed over years in banking—beginning at Standard Chartered Bank in 1998, followed by key positions including head of treasury at the National Bank of Commerce (NBC), CEO of NBC, and chairman of the Tanzanian Bankers Association (TBA). His leadership was characterized by a blend of technical acumen and visionary strategy, qualities that made him a respected figure in Tanzania's financial and public sectors alike.

Government officials, colleagues, and friends have shared their condolences, with many acknowledging Mafuru’s dedication and the impact of his work. Kheri Mahimbali, former permanent secretary of the Ministry of Minerals, expressed deep sorrow, saying, “Mafuru will be remembered for his extraordinary contributions in both the private and public sectors. A visionary leader has left us too soon.”

President Hassan also extended her condolences to Mafuru’s family, the Planning Commission staff, and Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, the Minister of State in the President’s Office (Planning and Investment), emphasizing the need for strength and patience in this difficult time. “May Almighty God grant strength and patience to his family during this difficult time and rest his soul in eternal peace,” she stated.

As the nation mourns, arrangements for Mafuru’s final rites are expected to be announced soon, as his family and colleagues prepare to honor his life and legacy. His passing leaves Tanzania with both a sense of loss and the challenge of appointing a new leader to carry forward the significant work he began in his distinguished career.
