President of the United Republic of Tanzania Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has vowed to secure Sh 3.6 billion to ensure the completion of new ferries currently under construction in Mwanza and Dar es Salaam.

The Head of State made this pledge on October 14, 2024, while addressing the public during the national celebrations of the Uhuru Torch Race, held at CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza.

Speaking about strategic projects in Mwanza, including water projects, road infrastructure, and the construction of the new passenger terminal at Mwanza Airport, President Samia assured the public that the government is committed to completing all key projects on time to promote development in the region.

"Regarding the ferries, when I arrived in Mwanza, I followed up on their construction. I was informed that the work is far along, but Sh 3.6 billion is still needed to finalize them. I promise the people of Mwanza that I will secure this amount so the ferries can be completed and operational," said President Samia.

In the 2024/2025 fiscal year, the government, through the Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical, and Services Agency (Temesa), is working on the construction of five new ferries in Mwanza.

These ferries will serve key areas, including Ijinga and Kahangala in Magu District, Bwiro and Bukondo in Ukerewe District, Nyakaliro and Kome, Buyagu and Mbalika in Sengerema District, Kisorya in Bunda District (Mara), and Rugezi in Ukerewe. The construction progress of these ferries has reached more than 85%.

Other ferry projects are ongoing in other regions, such as Mafia and Nyamisati in the Coast Region, where a new ferry's construction is over 35% complete. In Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, two smaller "Sea Taxi" ferries are planned to enhance transport services.

As President Samia continues to prioritize infrastructure projects, her administration is focused on ensuring that all key initiatives are completed for the benefit of the people.
