Dar es Salaam
– President Samia Suluhu Hassan has declared Wednesday, November 27, 2024, a
public holiday to facilitate Tanzanians' participation in the Local Government
Elections. This announcement aims to ensure all eligible voters have the
opportunity to elect leaders for villages and wards without work obligations
hindering their participation.
The declaration aligns
with the National Holidays Act (Chapter 35), which grants the President the
authority to designate additional public holidays or adjust the national holiday
schedule. Through this provision, the Minister responsible for local government
confirmed the day as the official election date for 2024.
"This measure
underscores the government’s commitment to fostering democratic participation
by providing every citizen with the time and space to cast their vote,"
the President emphasized in her directive issued on November 22, 2024.
By declaring the day a
holiday, the government hopes to boost voter turnout and enhance engagement in
the democratic process. Citizens are encouraged to use this opportunity to
participate fully in shaping the future leadership of their local communities.
The Local Government
Elections will be a critical moment for Tanzanians to exercise their civic
rights, choosing representatives who will play a pivotal role in addressing
grassroots issues and driving local development.
