Dar es Salaam prepares for local government elections: voters ready for action

By Charles Mkoka

The Regional Commissioner of Dar es Salaam, Albert Chalamila, addressed the media on November 25, just two days before the highly anticipated local government elections. With over three million registered voters spread across 564 streets in Dar es Salaam, the stage is set for citizens to make their voices heard.

Speaking passionately, Chalamila urged all registered voters to seize this opportunity to participate in shaping the city’s leadership. “I would like to take this opportunity to once again ask and inform the residents of Dar es Salaam, especially those who have registered, to use this important opportunity to fulfill their democratic duty by electing the best leaders,” he emphasized.

Chalamila highlighted the broader significance of the election, noting its role in enhancing Tanzania’s national and international reputation. “This election builds a positive image both nationally and internationally by having a free and fair election that reflects the 4Rs echoed by Mama Samia,” he said, referencing the reforms championed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

To ensure smooth voting on November 27, more than 1,800 registration centers were utilized over four days to register citizens. On election day, additional polling centers will be operational, enabling voting to take place between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Improvements were made to address complaints raised during the registration period, including the introduction of indoor and outdoor voting stations equipped with tents to accommodate voters.

The Regional Commissioner also assured the public of robust security measures. He stressed that law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to maintain peace and order throughout the election process. “No one will threaten the peace of this city and be left untouched. Peace matters are in good shape, and security forces will continue their duties without interfering with anyone else,” he declared, emphasizing that citizens can vote without fear or disruption.

Joining the push to encourage voter turnout, Sultani Mohammed Mrima and fellow artists involved in the "Maendeleo Ni Mimi" (Development is Me) campaign have played a vital role. The campaign reached its peak with the release of a short film promoting voter participation, reinforcing the message of civic responsibility.

“We have been working closely with the Regional Commissioner’s office in encouraging citizens to register, and we are very grateful to the Honorable President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mama Samia, for the great work of building our country. All Tanzanians, let’s come out in large numbers to vote and elect our local government leaders because they are the foundation and are essential for our development,” Sultani urged.

With preparations finalized and security measures in place, Dar es Salaam is ready for a decisive and historic election day.
