The Mining Commission has granted a total of 54,626 mining licenses over the past seven years, contributing significantly to the mining sector in Tanzania.

According to Engineer Aziza Swedi, the Acting Director of Licensing and ICT, the licenses were issued between 2018/2019 and September 30, 2024. These included various categories: 1,683 Prospecting Licenses (PLs), 144 Mining Licenses (MLs), and 5 Special Mining Licenses (SMLs). Additionally, 35,536 Primary Mining Licenses (PMLs), 216 Processing Licenses (PCLs), 7 Refinery Licenses (RFLs), 6 Smelting Licenses (SLs), 12,273 Brokers Licenses (BLs), and 4,756 Dealers Licenses (DLs) were also granted during this period.

The Commission has also focused on supporting small-scale miners by designating more areas for their activities.

As of October 2024, a total of 65 areas in different regions have been set aside to help small-scale miners, providing them with an opportunity to obtain mining licenses and access financial support for their operations.

In addition, the Mining Commission has partnered with the Geological and Mining Research Institute of Tanzania (GST) to conduct research in various areas, enabling miners to access valuable information about mineral resources and enhance their mining activities.

To further streamline the process, the Commission has implemented a new system to improve the processing, management, and issuance of mining licenses. This system will eventually be integrated with other government systems, and data from the old system will be transferred to the new one. Training for system users will also be conducted to ensure smooth operations.
