Minister for Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Mr. Jerry Silaa, has announced a strategic framework to boost Tanzania's media sector by fostering robust partnerships with journalists and media houses.
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Dar es Salaam, held in anticipation of the upcoming 2025 Local Government and General Elections, Silaa expressed his commitment to advancing the media industry through policy and legislative reforms that align with contemporary needs.
In his address, Minister Silaa emphasized the media’s vital role as a pillar of economic, social, and security development, as well as a cornerstone of good governance.
He noted the government’s recognition of the media’s contribution to enhancing transparency and accountability, highlighting that over 1,023 media outlets are actively contributing to the nation’s development.
“We are aware that a strong and independent media is essential to democracy and development. Our goal is to build a thriving media sector that reflects the highest standards of professionalism and public service,” Silaa stated.
The Minister outlined plans to engage directly with key stakeholders across the sector, starting with media organizations and groups before moving on to individual media outlets. The aim, he noted, is to foster an environment of open dialogue and knowledge exchange that will help inform policy changes to support the sector's growth.
Silaa also pointed to recent amendments in media regulations, which include the decriminalization of defamation offenses and the reinforcement of journalists' freedom of expression, access to information, and editorial independence.
“These reforms reflect our commitment to empowering the media sector, enabling it to operate without fear while upholding the standards of truth and accountability,” he added.
The Minister commended journalists for their efforts in disseminating information about government development projects and encouraged them to continue adhering to laws, regulations, and professional ethics, especially during the election period.
He underscored the historic role of Tanzania’s media industry in national unity, citing its contributions to the independence movement and nation-building under the leadership of the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.
Mr. Silaa concluded by reaffirming his commitment to working hand-in-hand with media professionals to ensure the sector not only informs but also significantly contributes to the nation's development goals.
“Together, we can make the media sector a stronger partner in Tanzania’s journey toward sustainable growth and national unity,” he said.
