Tanzanian governmet boosts Dar es Salaam infrastructure with TZS 500 billion investment

President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration has allocated over TZS 500 billion to TANROADS for infrastructure development in Dar es Salaam over the past three years.

The substantial funding supports strategic road and bridge projects to ensure that the 619 kilometers of roads managed by TANROADS in the region remain accessible throughout the year.

On November 8, 2024, TANROADS Dar es Salaam Regional Manager, Engineer John Mkumbo, detailed the progress of these projects, highlighting major expansions and improvements to the city’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and key road networks.

One of the ongoing projects is the second phase of the BRT, which covers 20.3 kilometers along Kilwa Road, the Port-Gerezani (Kariakoo) corridor, Chang’ombe Road from the Nyerere Road junction to Mgulani, Kawawa Road from Magomeni to Nyerere Road, and Sokoine Road from Gerezani to the Mwalimu Nyerere Building. This phase is funded at TZS 260 billion.

The third phase of the BRT, spanning 23.3 kilometers, connects the city center to Gongolamboto via Azikiwe Road from the Old Post Office to the Library, Bibi Titi Road, Nkurumah Road, and Nyerere Road.

The segment also includes Uhuru Road, which links the Gerezani transport hub to Gongolamboto through Buguruni, at a cost of TZS 231 billion. Another significant project is the fourth phase of the BRT, covering 30.1 kilometers from the city center to Tegeta, including Ali Hassan Mwinyi Road from the Library to Tegeta and Sam Nujoma Road from Mwenge to Ubungo, with a budget of TZS 429 billion.

Engineer Mkumbo noted the recent completion of a temporary bridge over the Mpiji River, which restored connectivity between Mbweni and Kiembeni after damage from El Niño rains. TANROADS plans to commence the construction of a permanent 140-meter bridge and 2.3 kilometers of connecting roads.

According to Engineer Clever Akilimali, TANROADS Dar es Salaam’s Head of Planning, the ongoing eight-lane road expansion from Kimara to Ubungo includes dedicated BRT lanes and auxiliary roads.

Along the Kimara to Kibaha route, 560 street lights and six bus stops have been installed to improve safety and accessibility. Nine traffic lights have also been installed at key intersections to enhance traffic flow.

These infrastructure investments signify a major step in Dar es Salaam’s development, aimed at improving urban mobility, easing congestion, and boosting road safety across the city.
