UNESCO Tanzania urges Media to promote inclusion of women and people with disabilities

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has called on media outlets in Tanzania to ensure equal representation by amplifying the voices of women and people with disabilities in their coverage.

Nancy Angulo, UNESCO-Tanzania’s Head of Communications and Information, made the appeal yesterday during a visit to the Media Aid for Indigenous and Pastoralist Community(MAIPAC) offices in Arusha.

“The media should provide opportunities for all groups in society to be heard, especially on matters of development,” Angulo stressed. “We urge you not to exclude or overlook women and people with disabilities, as their voices often go unheard.”

Angulo expressed satisfaction with MAIPAC’s efforts in utilizing media to engage marginalized communities and drive positive change.

“MAIPAC stands out as the only media organization in Tanzania working directly with remote and underserved communities. I encourage you to maintain strong partnerships with community radios and journalists to further support these groups,” she said.

She further urged the media to play a role in educating the public on preventing violence against women, children, and people with disabilities.

“With the general elections approaching, it is important to ensure that all voices—particularly those of women and people with disabilities—are included in the discourse,” Angulo emphasized.

Angulo also applauded MAIPAC’s strategic efforts to enhance participation and advocacy for women, children, and people with disabilities across social issues.

During the visit, MAIPAC’s Executive Director, Mussa Juma, and Administrative Manager, Andrea Ngobole, requested UNESCO's support in implementing several initiatives throughout the country.

Juma expressed gratitude to UNESCO for inviting MAIPAC staff to recent training on gender, advocacy, and inclusive participation. The training, which also involved community radios and the Government Information Service (MAELEZO), focused on fostering equality and addressing social challenges.

“We have gained valuable insights and are committed to applying them through dedicated programs, articles, and publications to promote equal participation of women and people with disabilities, while also combating violence against children,” Juma stated.

Ngobole added that MAIPAC would continue working with professionalism and dedication to advance advocacy efforts that support community development.
