Dar es Salaam – The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has successfully seized 20 tons of substandard and non-compliant products in a special operation conducted in Dar es Salaam. Speaking to the press on October 11, 2024, the TBS Eastern Zone Manager, Noor Meghji, highlighted that the operation targeted harmful products such as illicit spirits and cosmetics containing toxic ingredients.
“In this operation, we focused on inspecting spirits, especially those found to be unsafe, as well as cosmetics with toxic components,” Meghji revealed. He further mentioned that the team also assessed energy drinks, some of which were found to have deficiencies and did not meet the required quality standards.
Meghji added that TBS plans to destroy the seized products after 14 days, allowing time for any complaints to be lodged by affected parties who believe they may have been wrongfully targeted.
In addition to the product inspections, the operation involved the inspection of premises dealing in food and cosmetics. Under Tanzanian law, such businesses are required to have TBS certification, which some establishments were found lacking. The non-compliant businesses were issued warning letters and instructed to follow the proper registration process.
Meghji urged business owners to maintain the proper storage of their products to ensure they retain the required quality standards and avoid any potential harm to consumers.
The TBS Eastern Zone has been conducting frequent inspections in Dar es Salaam, a key entry point for various products, as part of ongoing efforts to prevent substandard goods from entering the domestic market and to uphold regulatory standards.
