As
Tanzania approaches the 2025 general elections, President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s
popularity is soaring, solidifying her reputation as a transformative leader
with a clear vision for national prosperity.
In a
relatively short time, she has made remarkable strides in the economy,
politics, diplomacy, social services, and party control, positioning herself as
a leader whose achievements speak so loudly that she may not even need a
traditional election campaign for re-election.
Under
President Samia’s leadership, Tanzania’s economy has shown notable growth and
resilience despite global challenges, such as inflationary pressures. Her
administration has prioritized infrastructure development, marked by the rapid
expansion of road networks, bridges, and ports, enhancing transport logistics
and boosting trade.
Ongoing
mega-projects like the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the completion of the
Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) continue to drive economic growth.
The recent inauguration of the Busisi Longest Bridge in the region is further
proof of her government’s commitment to nation-building, creating jobs, and
fostering economic pride.
Samia’s
administration has also transformed Tanzania’s business environment through
reforms that have attracted foreign direct investment, particularly in mining,
tourism, and agriculture. The country’s international economic profile has
improved, drawing in more investors eager to tap into Tanzania’s vast
potential.
In
politics, President Samia has fostered inclusivity and dialogue. She has taken
concrete steps to ease political tensions, reopening lines of communication
with opposition parties and promoting a spirit of national unity.
This
approach has contributed significantly to political stability, ensuring diverse
voices have a platform in shaping Tanzania’s future. However, some opposition
factions, notably Chadema, have sought to stir unrest, evidenced by their call
for national demonstrations—efforts that failed due to a lack of public
support.
On the
diplomatic front, Samia has reinvigorated Tanzania’s global standing. Since
assuming office, she has repaired and strengthened international relations,
from neighboring East African countries to broader global partnerships.
Her active
participation in forums such as the United Nations and African Union has
elevated Tanzania’s profile, with her advocacy for African interests gaining
international respect. These efforts have led to increased foreign aid and
partnerships, particularly in sectors like health, education, and
infrastructure. Samia also demonstrated her leadership when she recently stood
firm against perceived diplomatic overreach, sending a clear message that
Tanzania’s sovereignty is paramount.
Domestically, Samia’s administration has prioritized access to quality social services. In education, she has expanded free primary and secondary education and increased funding for vocational training to equip young people with essential skills for the job market.

The
construction of new schools and the recruitment of more teachers have reduced
overcrowding, improving student outcomes. In healthcare, her government has
invested heavily in rural infrastructure, making medical services more
accessible.
Initiatives
to improve maternal and child health, reduce mortality rates, and combat
diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS have been widely praised.
Tanzania’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with vaccine rollouts and public
health campaigns, further solidified public trust in her leadership.
President
Samia has also maintained firm control over the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi
(CCM), ensuring political stability. She has skillfully navigated internal
party dynamics, balancing conservative elements that favor a more traditional
approach with reformist liberal members pushing for change.
By
accommodating both sides, she has kept the party united, enabling her to push
forward progressive policies while preserving the party’s core values. Her
ability to neutralize internal dissent has been pivotal in maintaining CCM’s
focus on national development.
One of
Samia’s most commendable qualities is her ability to bridge the gap between
conservative and liberal elements within both her government and party. She has
respected the voices of senior leaders like Mkuchika and Lukuvi, ensuring
continuity, while also bringing in younger ministers, such as Antony Mavunde,
to infuse new energy into key positions. Recent moves to purge dissent within
the party have demonstrated her commitment to maintaining stability, a hallmark
of Tanzania’s political culture.
As the
2025 elections approach, President Samia Suluhu Hassan stands as a leader whose
track record speaks for itself. Her achievements in economic growth, political
stability, diplomacy, social services, and party unity have garnered widespread
admiration. Her skill in managing both liberal and conservative factions within
her party and government showcases her political acumen and unifying leadership
style.
With such
an impressive record, Samia may find herself in a position where a traditional
election campaign is almost unnecessary. Her accomplishments have built a solid
foundation of trust and support, making her re-election in 2025 seem not just
likely, but almost inevitable.
