The Electricity Transmission and Distribution Construction and Operation (ETDCO), a subsidiary of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), is advancing efforts to build and rehabilitate power infrastructure across mining areas in Tanzania.
Speaking during the 7th Mining Technology Exhibition at Bombambili Grounds in Geita, ETDCO’s Acting Director of Technical Services, Engineer Dismas Massawe, highlighted the company's achievements and ongoing projects.
He emphasized that ETDCO is wholly owned by the government through TANESCO, with a mandate to implement major energy projects nationwide.
“We have successfully constructed a 100-kilometer power line from Geita to the StamiGold (Stamico) mine and connected the facility to the national grid,” said Massawe.
He further disclosed that ETDCO had completed another power project for Geita Gold Mine (GGML) and built a 58-kilometer line connecting Kabanga Nickel Mine in Ngara.
Massawe added that the company is working on new power lines in Katavi to provide electricity to additional mining sites.
Beyond the mining sector, ETDCO is also engaged in several national energy projects, including the construction of a 132 kV transmission line in Tabora and multiple initiatives under the Rural Energy Agency (REA) program.
Among other developments, the company is executing a 33 kV power line project spanning 45 kilometers from the Mpomvu substation to Kasamwa.
Massawe emphasized that ETDCO’s participation in the exhibition aims to promote the company’s technical capacity in building and maintaining infrastructure for both large and small mining operations.
“We want the mining sector to know that we have the expertise to handle projects of all sizes, ensuring reliable power supply to support efficient operations,” he stated.
He also urged both private and public entities to collaborate with ETDCO in their projects, highlighting the company’s readiness to contribute to energy solutions in Tanzania.
