The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Arts, and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, has called upon government institutions to actively engage in organizing sports bonanzas to improve the health of employees and enhance the nation’s presence in international sports competitions by nurturing new talents.
Msigwa delivered this statement on September 14, 2024, in Dar es Salaam, during a sports bonanza organized by the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), which brought together government workers for a day of fun and competition.
Commending TBS for aligning with the Sixth Phase Government's efforts, Msigwa praised the organization's commitment to promoting sports at the workplace.
He highlighted that allocating a budget for such activities not only boosts employees' health but also fosters strong interpersonal relationships at work, leading to increased creativity and productivity.
“I urge TBS management to set aside funds to build high-quality sports facilities at the workplace,” Msigwa said, stressing that creating conducive environments for sports activities would encourage more participation from employees.
TBS Board Chairman, Prof. Othman Chande, echoed Msigwa’s sentiments, sharing that the bonanza, initiated five years ago, aims to strengthen workers' health and promote unity.
"Players may compete in different teams during the event, but after the game, they come together as one—it builds friendships," Chande remarked, emphasizing the social and emotional benefits of the bonanza.
He further noted that such events would increase the pool of potential athletes capable of representing Tanzania on international platforms.
Adding to the discourse, TBS Sports Chairman, Nyabutwenza Methusela, emphasized the mental health benefits of engaging in sports.
He pointed out that participation in sports helps workers manage stress, boosting their overall performance upon returning to work.
"Through sports, both mental and physical health improve, making employees more productive as they become healthier in body and mind," Methusela explained.
The sports bonanza stands as a testament to the growing recognition of sports as a vital component in enhancing employee well-being and nurturing national sports talent.
