Why one should invest in Tanzania; Manyara Region

By Alfred Zacharia

The Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) has released a comprehensive investment guide for Tanzania’s Manyara region, showcasing its strategic importance and diverse opportunities for both local and foreign investors.

Investing in Manyara comes with significant advantages, primarily due to its strategic location. Positioned as a gateway to Tanzania’s northern tourist circuit, Manyara is well-connected to major regions, making it an ideal hub for trade, tourism, and industry. The region's proximity to key areas such as Arusha, Kilimanjaro, and Dodoma further enhances its appeal as a prime investment destination.

Manyara is endowed with a wealth of natural resources, offering a range of investment opportunities. The region is rich in minerals such as tanzanite, ruby, and green garnet, making it a hotspot for mining and mineral processing industries. Additionally, the fertile agricultural land and favorable climate provide excellent conditions for crop cultivation and livestock farming. With seven lakes in the region, fishing also plays a significant role in diversifying the investment potential.

The Tanzanian government has introduced transparent and investor-friendly policies that make Manyara an attractive destination for business. These policies include tax exemptions, import duty reductions on capital goods, and streamlined processes for obtaining permits and licenses. The government’s commitment to fostering a conducive business environment is evident in the incentives provided to investors, particularly in priority sectors such as agriculture, mining, tourism, and manufacturing.

Agriculture is the backbone of Manyara’s economy, with the region’s fertile land supporting the cultivation of crops such as maize, beans, pigeon peas, and sunflowers. Investors have the opportunity to capitalize on this by establishing processing plants for grains and horticultural products, adding value to the agricultural output and catering to both local and international markets.

The Mirerani Hills in Manyara are the exclusive source of tanzanite, a gemstone found only in Tanzania. This unique resource offers investors the chance to develop a Tanzanite City, a hub for processing and trading this precious gem. Additionally, there are opportunities to establish mineral processing plants for limestone, gypsum, and other valuable minerals found in the region.

Manyara is also home to iconic national parks such as Tarangire and Lake Manyara, as well as cultural heritage sites that attract tourists from around the world. The region’s rich wildlife, including lions, elephants, and over 550 bird species, provides vast potential for eco-tourism and hospitality investments. There are opportunities to develop eco-friendly lodges, campsites, and cultural tourism ventures that showcase the heritage of indigenous groups like the Maasai and Hadzabe.

The Manyara Region has allocated over 2,500 hectares for industrial development, including Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Export Processing Zones (EPZs). These zones offer tax incentives and other benefits to investors looking to establish manufacturing plants for products such as packaging materials, cement, and essential oils.

To further attract investors, the Manyara Regional Government, in collaboration with the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), offers a range of incentives. These include tax exemptions, access to land for industrial and agricultural purposes, and support services to assist investors in navigating the regulatory environment. The streamlined process for obtaining permits and licenses ensures that investors can quickly and efficiently establish their operations in the region.

With its strategic location, abundant natural resources, and supportive government policies, Manyara Region presents a compelling case for investment. Whether in agriculture, mining, tourism, or manufacturing, investors have the opportunity to contribute to the region’s economic growth while benefiting from a dynamic and promising business environment. As Tanzania continues to grow, Manyara stands out as a key player in the country’s journey toward industrialization and economic prosperity.
