Chadema leaders released on bail after interrogation in Mbeya

Mbeya. Police in Mbeya Region have released Chadema leaders, including National Chairman Freeman Mbowe, along with party members and supporters, on bail after being questioned.

Awadhi Haji, the Police Force Commissioner for Operations and Training, confirmed that the opposition figures were released on the night of August 12, 2024.

According to Mr. Haji, around 520 opposition leaders, members, and supporters were detained on suspicion of planning to engage in restricted political activities.

While many of those detained have been released on bail, some remain in custody due to their inability to meet bail conditions and are facing various criminal charges.

Mr. Haji stressed that law enforcement will not hesitate to take firm action against anyone who breaks the law.

"Approximately 375 individuals were arrested on Sunday, August 11, 2024, including 261 men and 114 women. An additional 145, comprising 112 men and 33 women, were arrested on Monday, August 12," he stated.

Among those arrested in the Kadege area for defying orders to suspend their journey to Mbeya for a planned indoor meeting were the party’s senior leaders, including Vice Chairman Tundu Lissu, Secretary-General John Mnyika, Nyasa Zone Chairman Joseph Mbilinyi (also known as Sugu), Youth Wing (Bavicha) Vice Chairperson Moza Ally, and her publicity secretary Twaha Mwaipaya.

Mr. Haji also confirmed that 145 supporters, including Chairman Freeman Mbowe and Bavicha Chairman John Pambalu, were arrested at Songwe Airport as they arrived for a prohibited conference, bringing the total number of arrested individuals to 520.

All suspects were questioned and returned to their respective locations under police escort, with those from the Mbeya Region granted bail.

Mr. Haji reiterated that the Police Force is dedicated to maintaining security and order in Mbeya City and other areas of the country showing signs of unrest, with continued monitoring of any plans to disrupt peace.

Commissioner Haji warned that anyone found guilty of disturbing the peace would face serious consequences, regardless of their position or status.

"The Police Force urges political leaders and their supporters to respect the country’s laws and regulations, and it will take strict legal action against anyone involved in disturbing the peace," said the Commissioner.
