A contract
worth TZS 366 billion has been signed to connect electricity to 3,060 hamlets
across in Dodoma city.
The
project under by the Rural Energy Agency (REA) will see at least 15 hamlets are
connected to power in each constituency of the capital city.
Deputy
Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, directed the
contractors to work with integrity and complete the project on time.
"Contractors
must be honest and finish the work on schedule," he said.
REA was
also urged to oversee the contractors fairly.
"There
are reports of contractors asking for money from residents, even though the
government has already paid for the services. I will take action against any
wrongdoing," Dr. Biteko warned.
The
project is part of the government's effort to provide electricity to all hamlets,
aiming to improve life in rural areas. The electrification will happen in
phases, starting with these 3,060 hamlets.
Dr. Biteko
expressed his gratitude to development partners for their support in making the
entire project possible.
"The
contract, totaling TZS 362 billion, were made possible through cooperation with
the World Bank and other development partners," he said.
The
partners include the governments of Norway and Sweden, the European Union, the
IMF, the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the French Development Agency.
The
project is expected to improve the livelihoods of rural residents. Dr. Biteko
assured that the government would continue to allocate resources to ensure
electricity reaches all Tanzanians.
REA's Director General, Engineer Hassan Said, confirmed that the project aims to bring electricity to every part of the capital city by September 2024.
