The European Union (EU) announced
on Tuesday the release of EUR 33.12 million, equivalent to Sh97 billion, as
budgetary support to Tanzania. This funding aims to drive sectoral reforms and
foster social and economic development across the nation.
The funds will target five key
sectors: the blue economy, urban improvement, gender equality, digital growth,
and the promotion of a digital Tanzania. These areas were selected to bolster
the resilience of Tanzanian citizens and elevate their living conditions.
In a statement, the EU emphasized
that “these funds will be directed towards governance reforms, capacity
building, and increasing coordination between ministries in Tanzania’s coastal
areas, including Zanzibar and the Indian Ocean.” This support aims to
strengthen sustainable development in Mwanza, Tanga, and Pemba, focusing on
environmental sustainability, economic opportunities, and enhanced public
services, particularly for women and youth.
On the front of gender equality,
the funding will address gender-based violence, promote women’s economic
empowerment, and support their participation in leadership and decision-making
processes. This initiative marks a significant step towards advancing gender
equality in Tanzania.
The programme to promote a digital
Tanzania will enhance financial governance and access to finance, aiming to
improve the mobilisation of domestic resources, support financial market
infrastructure, and foster dialogue between the public and private sectors.
Special attention will be given to small and medium-sized enterprises, as well
as women and youth, to ensure inclusive growth.
Additionally, the urban improvement
funds will target infrastructure development and better urban planning to
create more livable cities. The blue economy initiative will focus on
sustainable exploitation of marine resources, fostering economic growth in coastal
areas while preserving environmental integrity.
This comprehensive support from the
EU underscores a robust commitment to Tanzania’s development, aiming to create
a more equitable, prosperous, and sustainable future for its citizens.
