The conference focused on the regional electricity market and strengthening power grid systems.
Key issues discussed during the meeting included the approval of amendments to the leadership agreements of EAPP, the establishment of an independent unit to manage the electricity trading market for member states, as well as the adoption of rules and procedures for the operation of the Council of Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, and the Executive Committee.
The meeting was attended by various leaders, including the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation responsible for East African Affairs, Hon. Tanzania plays a significant role in EAPP, contributing to the integration and development of the region's power systems. With its strategic geographical position, Tanzania serves as a vital hub for power interconnections between member states, facilitating the transfer and distribution of electricity across the region.
The country’s vast energy resources, including natural gas, hydroelectric power, and renewable energy sources, position it as a key supplier in the regional energy market.
Tanzania has been actively expanding its power generation capacity and upgrading its transmission infrastructure, which are crucial for the stability and reliability of the regional power grid. Additionally, the country contributes to formulating regional policies and regulations that govern the operation of the power market, advocating for regional cooperation and sustainable energy solutions.
This meeting is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen regional cooperation in the energy sector and ensure reliable and affordable electricity for the citizens of EAPP member states. It also lays the foundation for improving power infrastructure and enhancing economic ties through energy cooperation in the East African region.
According to Hon. Dr. Biteko, Tanzania's participation in this meeting is crucial in solidifying the country's role as a key player in the region's energy sector development and advancing the strategic national goals of ensuring energy security and fostering economic growth
