Tanzania and Uganda have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation as the two countries continue to advance the implementation of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), a major regional energy project expected to boost economic growth and investment opportunities.

Tanzania’s Vice-President, Deogratius Ndejembi, representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan, held talks with Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at State House in Entebbe, Uganda, focusing on progress in the construction of the pipeline.

The discussions centred on the development of the strategic infrastructure project, which will transport crude oil from Hoima in Uganda to Chongoleani in Tanga, Tanzania.

The meeting underscored the importance of continued cooperation between the two neighbouring countries in implementing strategic development projects, particularly in the oil and gas sector.

The EACOP project is expected to strengthen regional energy infrastructure, facilitate investment and create economic opportunities for communities in both countries.

The talks were attended by Tanzania’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Ngwaru Maghembe; Tanzania’s Ambassador to Uganda, Major General Marco Gaguti; and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy responsible for oil and gas, Dr James Mataragio.

Other officials included Petroleum and Gas Commissioner Goodluck Shirima and Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) Managing Director Mussa Makame.
