Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi has urged Tanzanian leaders to uphold the legacy of former Speaker of the National Assembly, the late Samuel John Sitta, by promoting integrity, accountability and strong public institutions.
He made the call on November 3, 2026, at the Parliament Building in Dodoma, where he represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan at an event marking 10 years since Sitta’s death and launching a book documenting his life and leadership journey.
Ndejembi said Sitta’s leadership was defined by his commitment to national interests, respect for Parliament and adherence to established rules and procedures.
He urged leaders to embrace these values in their daily responsibilities, stressing that public leadership should be about serving citizens rather than pursuing personal recognition or benefits.
“True leadership is not a means of seeking popularity, status or personal benefits. Rather, it is a responsibility, public service and a commitment to making sacrifices for the benefit of others,” he said.
The Vice-President also encouraged Tanzanians, particularly leaders, young people and students, to read the 217-page book to learn important lessons about patriotism, public service and the role of strong institutions in building the nation.
He said remembering people who had contributed to national development was important in preserving the country's history and inspiring future generations to serve with dedication.
“A nation that remembers its builders preserves its identity; a nation that honours public service inspires others to serve; and a nation that preserves its history protects its future,” Ndejembi said.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the National Assembly Mussa Azan Zungu said Sitta would remain remembered for his hard work, patriotism and contribution to Parliament and the country.
Sitta’s widow, Margaret Sitta, described him as a person who valued justice, innovation and accountability, guided by the philosophy of maintaining high standards and delivering results.
The ceremony brought together government leaders, members of Sitta’s family and former colleagues to reflect on his contribution to the country.
The anniversary highlighted the importance of turning the late Sitta’s leadership principles into action, particularly by strengthening public institutions, promoting accountability and ensuring that the interests of citizens remain central to public service.
