The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) plans to build a major embassy complex in Dodoma’s Government City, Mtumba, in a move expected to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
DRC Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka made the announcement on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, during a visit to the site earmarked for the construction of her country’s embassy.
Ms Tuluka toured the proposed site and received a presentation on the development of Government City, including its infrastructure and ongoing construction projects.
She thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for the invitation to visit Tanzania and commended the cooperation between the two countries, particularly in security matters.
“Cooperation between Tanzania and Congo is important and strategic. We should continue working together to promote the economies of our two countries,” she said.
The planned embassy is expected to provide a permanent diplomatic presence in the capital, which has been developed to accommodate key government institutions and diplomatic missions.
DRC Infrastructure Minister John Banza Lunda said Tanzania was a strategic partner, explaining that his country intended to establish a major embassy in Government City.
He also highlighted infrastructure cooperation between the two countries, revealing that the DRC was constructing a port on Lake Tanganyika, with completion expected in March 2027.
The project is expected to improve transport links between the neighbouring countries, making it easier for traders and ordinary citizens to move goods and travel across their shared economic space.
On her part, Tanzania's Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Angellah Kairuki, said the two countries had opportunities to deepen cooperation in the mining sector, particularly in lithium, noting that the mineral was also found in Dodoma.
She said Tanzania was ready to work with the DRC in areas where it had the capacity to contribute.
Ms Kairuki also called on Ms Tuluka to encourage Congolese traders to explore the market for wine produced in Dodoma, saying stronger trade links could create opportunities for businesses in both countries.
Earlier, Prime Minister's Office Director of Government Activities Coordination Paul Sangawe said Government City had been designed around the smart city concept, with emphasis on environmental conservation, modern communication systems and supporting infrastructure.
He said the project was being financed through domestic government resources and coordinated by the Prime Minister's Office responsible for Policy, Parliament, Coordination and Persons with Disabilities.
Mr Sangawe said construction had been implemented in two phases, with the first starting in 2018 and the second in 2021. The second phase is still ongoing.
