Six nations to compete in Nyerere Cup volleyball tournament

Six countries are expected to compete in the Nyerere Cup volleyball tournament, which will be held from October 8 to 14 at the Tanzania Volleyball Federation (TVF) Arena in Mwembe Yanga, Dar es Salaam.

The participating countries are Zambia, Rwanda, South Sudan, Kenya, Burundi and hosts Tanzania, according to TVF Director of Administration Riziki Godwin.

Godwin said the tournament was intended to bring the participating countries together to honour and recognise the contribution of Tanzania’s founding president, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who died on October 14, 1999.

“We are continuing with preparations as we look forward to joining hands with other countries in commemorating Mwalimu Nyerere through sport,” Godwin said.

He said the tournament would also provide an opportunity for the participating nations to interact and strengthen cooperation through volleyball, with Tanzania hosting the international event.

The competition is expected to provide volleyball fans with an opportunity to watch regional teams compete in Dar es Salaam, while also giving players exposure to international competition.

Godwin urged Tanzanians to prepare for the tournament and turn out in large numbers to support the teams when the competition begins.

The Nyerere Cup will be held after the conclusion of national volleyball competitions, with organisers saying preparations are continuing ahead of the international tournament.
