Farmers in Busokelo District are being encouraged to adopt proper fertiliser-use practices to increase avocado production, improve fruit quality and strengthen their access to local and international markets.
The Tanzania Fertiliser Regulatory Authority (TFRA) is providing farmers with practical education on the proper use of fertilisers during the 2026 Avocado Exhibition, highlighting the role of informed farming practices in improving agricultural productivity and farmers’ livelihoods.
TFRA Senior Commercial Officer Eliakimu Mniko said the authority’s participation in the exhibition aims to equip farmers with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about fertiliser selection and application.
He noted that Busokelo has established itself as an important avocado-producing area, with its farmers producing high-quality fruits that meet international market requirements.
Mniko emphasised that proper fertiliser use could help farmers build on these achievements by improving crop productivity and maintaining the quality standards required in competitive markets.
For farmers, access to reliable agricultural information is essential to making the most of their investments, reducing inappropriate fertiliser use and improving the returns from their farms.
Avocado farmer Prisca Batayuyu commended TFRA for bringing fertiliser education closer to farmers, saying the initiative would improve their understanding of the importance of using quality fertilisers correctly.
She said the knowledge provided at the exhibition would help farmers make better decisions about fertiliser use and adopt practices that support healthier crops and improved yields.
Another farmer, Kassim Msafiri, said the training had helped him better understand the importance of considering soil requirements when growing avocados.
He expressed confidence that applying the knowledge would help increase his farm’s output and improve fruit quality, enabling his produce to compete more effectively in international markets.
The farmers’ experiences highlight the importance of combining agricultural production with practical knowledge to help improve farm performance, strengthen household incomes and create greater opportunities for rural communities.
The 2026 Avocado Exhibition is being held at Lwanga Secondary School grounds in Busokelo District Council, Mbeya Region.
The exhibition provides an opportunity for farmers and agricultural stakeholders to exchange knowledge and learn about practices that can improve avocado production and quality.
Through its participation, TFRA is reinforcing the importance of responsible fertiliser use as part of broader efforts to support farmers, improve agricultural productivity and strengthen Tanzania’s position in the international avocado market.
