Police in Geita have arrested a man identified as Faustine Zakaria over allegations that he attempted to disrupt Tanzania’s financial system after a video allegedly linking him to plans to interfere with the country’s financial stability circulated online.
According to a statement issued by the Geita Regional Police Commander on October 1, 2026, Mr Zakaria was arrested after he appeared in a video discussing what police described as plans to damage Tanzania’s financial system.
Police said the video also contained references to activities related to transport and other matters within the country.
The force said the suspect, who was arrested on allegations of attempting to damage the country’s financial system, denied the allegations, saying the matter was a misunderstanding.
Police said Mr Zakaria had shared the video through his social media accounts on August 23, 2026, an action that prompted authorities to intervene and begin investigations.
The case is being investigated in cooperation with the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), with police saying further legal action would be taken after the investigation is completed.
The development comes as authorities continue to monitor activities that could affect confidence in Tanzania’s financial system, including the circulation of information on social media that may have implications for public confidence and economic stability.
However, the police statement did not provide details on the specific financial institutions, transactions or mechanisms that investigators believe were targeted, nor did it disclose the exact offences the suspect is expected to face.
Police urged members of the public to respect and protect Tanzania’s national assets, describing them as symbols of the country’s sovereignty and national dignity.
The force also cautioned citizens against engaging in activities that could undermine or damage national assets and institutions.
The arrest and investigation follow the circulation of the video, with police saying they would provide further action through legal procedures once the investigation is concluded.
