The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Infrastructure has expressed satisfaction with progress in the construction of roads linked to preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Arusha, while insisting that the projects must be completed on time and meet the required quality standards.

During an inspection tour of the projects on October 24, 2026, the committee's Vice-Chairperson, Mr Aboubakar Asenga, commended the Ministry of Works and the Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads) for the progress achieved.

However, he stressed that construction speed should not come at the expense of quality, noting that the roads would remain important public infrastructure long after the continental tournament.

"Ensure these roads are completed to the required quality standards and within the agreed timeframe. They belong to Tanzanians and will continue serving the public even after AFCON, so quality must be given priority alongside the pace of implementation," he said.

The committee also directed the Ministry of Works, regional and district government leaders, and project supervisors to strengthen monitoring to ensure that contractors adhere to contractual obligations.

It further called for timely resolution of challenges affecting residents living in areas traversed by the projects.

Deputy Minister for Works, Eng Godfrey Kasekenya, said the government was committed to completing the AFCON-related road projects on schedule to improve transport infrastructure, ease traffic congestion and enhance Arusha's appearance ahead of the tournament.

He identified the projects as the 9.1-kilometre road connecting Arusha city centre to Arusha Airport and extending to Kisongo, which is being upgraded into a four-lane road, and the 70-kilometre Mbauda/Tanganyika Packers-Losinyai road.

Eng Kasekenya said the government would continue closely supervising contractors to ensure that construction progresses as planned and meets the established quality standards.

He added that strategically important sections of the roads were expected to be completed before March 2027.

The Deputy Minister also urged Arusha residents to take part in improving the city's appearance by beautifying their homes and surrounding areas to make the destination more attractive to visitors expected during AFCON.

He said project supervision would also be strengthened to ensure that the quality of construction reflects the value of public funds invested.

Once completed, the projects are expected to improve traffic flow in Arusha, facilitate the movement of people and goods, stimulate economic activities, create employment opportunities and boost tourism in the region.
