Construction of a 950-metre perimeter wall at Tanzania’s new model prison in Msalato, Dodoma, has reached 45 per cent completion, with the Prisons Service chief praising prison officers involved in the project.
Prisons Commissioner General Jeremiah Yoram Katungu made the remarks on Thursday, October 22, 2026, after inspecting construction progress at the site, where he assessed the wall from both inside and outside the facility.
He commended the prison officers working as technicians for their commitment and adherence to required construction standards.
“I congratulate all the technicians for the good work you have been doing. You have carried out this work with dedication. I have been visiting regularly to inspect the progress, either personally or by sending my assistants. The work is very good,” he said.
Mr Katungu said he had been monitoring the project through regular inspections, while continuing to support its implementation.
Project engineer and Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Ambrose Sostenes said construction activities included preparing reinforcement steel for columns and beams, assembling reinforcement cages, pouring concrete into vertical and horizontal columns, and building guard posts at the corners of the prison wall.
Workers were also watering completed sections of the structure to support the concrete curing process.
Mr Sostenes said Mr Katungu had provided support to the project by ensuring that essential construction materials and other requirements were made available on time.
The new model prison is being built in Msalato, Dodoma, as part of the government’s prison infrastructure development efforts. However, the latest update covers the perimeter wall, and the overall completion rate of the entire facility was not provided.
