BoT opens government bond investment to citizens, sets October 15 auction

By The Respondents Reporter

The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has invited citizens and other investors to participate in a government bond auction scheduled for October 15, 2026, offering an opportunity to invest in government securities and earn regular interest over the long term.

According to the central bank’s auction notice, the 25-year bond carries an annual interest rate of 12.75 per cent and will mature on October 16, 2051.

The minimum investment is Sh1 million, making the bond accessible to individuals who meet the investment requirement and wish to explore long-term savings and investment opportunities.

Investors will receive interest payments twice a year, on April 16 and October 16, throughout the bond’s applicable payment period, subject to the terms of the issue.

Government bonds allow citizens to invest their money in government securities while enabling the Government to raise funds for public financing. For individual investors, they can provide a source of periodic income, although returns depend on the bond’s terms and applicable tax obligations.

The 25-year maturity period means investors should carefully consider their financial goals and whether they can commit their money for the long term. Investors who may need access to their funds before maturity should seek information on the conditions and risks associated with selling bonds before the maturity date.

The BoT has encouraged interested investors, including retail investors, to participate in the auction.

Citizens seeking further details on the auction, investment procedures and applicable conditions can visit the Bank of Tanzania’s official website at www.bot.go.tz before making an investment decision.
