Simba, Yanga exchange warnings ahead of high-stakes Kariakoo Derby

Simba SC and Young Africans (Yanga) have stepped up their preparations for the highly anticipated Kariakoo Derby, with both camps expressing confidence ahead of their NBC Premier League showdown at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam tonight.

The two rivals are scheduled to meet on October 10, 2026, at 7pm, in a contest expected to draw thousands of football fans eager to see which side will claim bragging rights and the crucial three points.

Beyond the fierce rivalry, the encounter offers both teams an opportunity to strengthen their league campaigns, with coaches and players insisting that thorough preparation, discipline and clinical finishing will be key to victory.

Simba head coach Steve Barker said his side had used the recent FIFA international break effectively, including holding a training camp in South Africa to sharpen the squad ahead of the derby.

“We have had good preparations and are well organised for this match after using the FIFA break to hold a training camp in South Africa,” Barker said.

His Yanga counterpart, Manqoba Mngqithi, acknowledged the challenge awaiting his team but maintained that the defending pressure of a derby would not distract his players from their objective.

Mngqithi said Yanga had concentrated on improving their attacking play, particularly their ability to create and convert goal-scoring opportunities.

“We know it will not be an easy match, but we have prepared well. Our objective is to create chances that will enable us to score goals and achieve a positive result,” he said.

The Yanga coach added that his team approached every fixture as a final, emphasising that confidence, tactical preparation and attention to key details would be essential against their long-standing rivals.

“Every match is a final for us. We are not afraid, and we have worked on important areas that we believe will help us perform well,” Mngqithi said.

He also pointed to the growing enthusiasm surrounding the Kariakoo Derby as evidence of the strong following football enjoys in Tanzania, where encounters between Simba and Yanga remain among the country's most anticipated sporting events.

Yanga player Selemani Mwalimu said the squad was ready for the challenge, noting that competition for places within the team meant every player selected would have to demonstrate commitment and execute the coach's instructions.

“We have prepared well and understand the importance of this match. Yanga have a deep squad, so every player given an opportunity must fulfil their responsibilities and follow the coach's instructions,” Mwalimu said.

He called on Yanga supporters to turn out in large numbers to rally behind the team, adding that he was determined to justify the trust placed in him by the coach.

“I ask our fans to come in large numbers to support us. I am proud that the coach trusts me, and I will do everything possible to fulfil my responsibilities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tanzania Premier League Board Acting Information Officer Yahya Abusheshe announced that Ahamed Arajiga from Manyara had been appointed as the centre referee. He will be assisted by Mohamed Mkono from Tanga and Alli Ramadhani from Zanzibar.

Abusheshe also urged supporters to secure their tickets early, revealing that only a limited number of VIP tickets remained available ahead of the much-awaited encounter.

He further confirmed that a report on the Video Support (FVS) system, which assists match officials in reviewing certain decisions, would be submitted in connection with the fixture.

“Only a few VIP tickets remain, so we urge fans to buy their tickets early. A report on the FVS will also be submitted for this match,” he said.

As anticipation builds across the country, both Simba and Yanga will be under pressure to turn their preparations into results.

For supporters, the derby represents more than a contest for three points: it is a battle for city pride, bragging rights and supremacy in one of Tanzania's biggest football rivalries.
