The Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) has directed the contractor building roads serving the planned AFCON stadium in Arusha to accelerate work that can be completed before El Niño rains expected from October.
The warning came after TARURA’s Advisory Board inspected the project, where construction has reached more than 60 percent.
Board chairman Engineer Florian Kabaka said the contractor should prioritise works that do not depend heavily on dry weather, particularly earthworks and bridges, to minimise the risk of delays and damage during the rainy season.
“We have visited all the projects and, generally, they are progressing well. Our main aim is to see the progress for ourselves and ensure that it matches the planned schedule,” Eng Kabaka said.
“We do not want preventable challenges to emerge later.”
Eng Kabaka said completing critical works before the rains would help protect the investment and prevent disruptions to construction.
The visit covered roads linking different areas around the AFCON stadium, with TARURA saying the overall project is expected to be completed by May 2027.
TARURA chief executive Eng Victor Seff said the inspection was intended to assess progress and ensure the project remains on schedule.
He directed the supervising consultant, Afrisa Consulting Ltd, to strengthen oversight and ensure works that can be completed before the rains are prioritised.
“We have insisted that all works that can be done before the rains should be undertaken now to avoid possible damage,” Eng Seff said.
The assessment is expected to help identify potential risks and allow preventive measures to be taken before the rains begin in October 2026.
