Tanzania urged to market Tanzanite more aggressively abroad

Tanzania should step up international marketing of Tanzanite to expand its global market and strengthen the economic value of the rare gemstone, Acting Kigoma Regional Administrative Secretary Dr Deogratias Sangu has said.

Dr Sangu said Tanzanite’s unique status as a gemstone associated exclusively with Tanzania gave the country an opportunity to build a stronger international brand around the mineral.

He made the remarks on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, after visiting the Mining Commission’s pavilion at the ninth National Technology and Investment Exhibition in the Mining Sector at the Dkt Samia Suluhu Hassan Grounds in Bomba Mbili, Geita.

He urged the Mining Commission to intensify efforts to promote Tanzanite in international markets, saying the gemstone was among the minerals that had helped put Tanzania on the global map.

“Tanzanite has a special importance to Tanzania because it is found in Mirerani, Simanjiro District in Manyara Region, which is recognised as the only known source of the gemstone in the world,” Dr Sangu said.

The official also praised the Mining Commission for its role in overseeing the mining industry, saying improved regulation had contributed to increased government revenue collection, greater participation of Tanzanians and foreign investors and a reduction in mineral smuggling.

The push for stronger international promotion comes as Tanzania seeks to capture more value from its mineral resources by expanding investment, processing and value addition within the country.

The Geita exhibition has brought together stakeholders to showcase mining technologies and investment opportunities, while also promoting discussion around mineral production, value addition and trade. The exhibition is scheduled to run until October 3, 2026.
