Tanzania chess team heads to Uzbekistan for Chess Olympiad

Tanzania’s 10-member national chess team will leave the country tomorrow for Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to compete in the Chess Olympiad, one of the sport’s major international team events.

The tournament will run from September 15 to 27, bringing together national teams from across the world as Tanzania seeks to make its mark on the international chess stage.

The team was handed the national flag ahead of its departure, with the National Sports Council (BMT) urging the players to combine competitive focus with discipline as they represent the country.

BMT senior officer Charles Maguzu said the players had been selected from a wider pool and should treat their participation as an opportunity to demonstrate Tanzania’s ability in chess.

“I congratulate the players who have earned a place on the team. There were many players, but only a few were selected. You have been entrusted with representing the country, so you should do your best and promote Tanzania through your performance,” Mr Maguzu said.

He said the technical bench had done its part in preparing the team, urging the players to follow the guidance of their coaches and make full use of the opportunity.

Beyond the tournament, Mr Maguzu challenged chess leaders to develop a long-term plan for expanding the sport in Tanzania and creating more opportunities for players.

He also thanked sponsors for supporting the team’s participation, saying their contribution had helped make Tanzania’s appearance at the tournament possible.

Men’s team captain Patrick Sarota said the squad had completed preparations and was ready for the competition.

“Our preparations have gone well and we are ready for the challenge. We thank the Government and our sponsors for their support, which will help us pursue our goals and represent Tanzania well,” Mr Sarota said.

The team’s participation in Samarkand gives Tanzania an opportunity to compete against some of the world’s strongest chess-playing nations while gaining international experience that could help strengthen the sport at home.
