Reliable electricity supply to mining operations is critical to sustaining production and government revenues, with the sector contributing more than TSh340 billion a year through royalties, taxes and other charges, Geita District Commissioner Hashimu Komba has said.
Mr Komba made the remarks in Dodoma on September 3, 2026, during the signing of a contract for the construction of the 220kV Mpomvu–Geita Gold Mining (GGM) transmission line and a power substation at GGM in Geita Region.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister for Energy Salome Makamba as the guest of honour.
Mr Komba said reliable power was essential to keeping mining operations running without interruptions, which would help increase production and strengthen the sector’s contribution to the economy.
He commended the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) for extending electricity infrastructure to mining areas, particularly large-scale operations such as GGM.
“We commend TANESCO for ensuring electricity reaches major mining areas such as GGM. Reliable power is essential for uninterrupted production and, ultimately, for increasing the mining sector’s contribution to the national economy,” he said.
Mr Komba also credited President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration with efforts to expand electricity access across the country.
He said all 474 villages in Geita Region had been connected to electricity, while contractor Central Electrical Installation was working to extend the service to 528 hamlets across the region.
Beyond electricity infrastructure, Mr Komba urged Tanzanians, small-, medium- and large-scale miners, as well as investors, to participate in a mining exhibition scheduled for September 23, 2026, in Geita.
He said the event would showcase investment opportunities arising from the region’s mineral resources and provide a platform for stakeholders to explore opportunities across Tanzania’s mining industry.
Mr Komba also pledged close cooperation between the Geita regional and district authorities, the contractor and TANESCO to ensure the Mpomvu–GGM project is completed on schedule.
He said removing unnecessary implementation obstacles would be crucial to delivering reliable electricity for mining operations and supporting increased mineral production.
