Nzega water project raises hopes of better supply, fewer disease outbreaks

Residents of Nzega town are set to benefit from improved access to clean and safe water following the expansion of the town’s water treatment and purification system.

The project, implemented by the Nzega Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority, was launched on Saturday, September 19, 2026, during the Uhuru Torch tour of Nzega District.

The expansion is expected to strengthen the town’s water supply and help reduce the risk of waterborne disease outbreaks linked to inadequate access to safe water.

Nzega District Commissioner Naitapwaki Tukai said the project would give residents greater access to water while allowing them to pay according to the amount they consume.

“Residents of Nzega town can use water according to their needs through this project by paying for what they want. If someone wants water worth Sh3,000, they can get it, and if they want water worth Sh100,000, they can also get it,” Ms Tukai said.

The project manager, engineer Mwiyombela Humphrey, said the project was implemented over 36 months by FABEC Investment Ltd at a total cost of Sh620.1 million.

He said the contractor had so far been paid Sh290 million.

The expansion is aimed at improving the capacity of the town’s water system to meet growing demand and provide more reliable access to treated water.

Uhuru Torch leader for 2026, Wazo Michael Mwang’onda, praised the quality of the project and urged authorities and residents to ensure the infrastructure is properly maintained.

“Given the quality of this project, this place should be protected with great care to ensure it remains sustainable for the wider benefit of the community,” Mr Mwang’onda said.

For residents, the expansion is expected to translate into more reliable access to safe water while supporting efforts to prevent diseases associated with unsafe water and poor sanitation.

The project also comes as local authorities seek to strengthen basic services in Nzega and respond to increasing demand for water from households and other users.
