Ngorongoro. The deaths of 10 lions in the Ndutu area of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area have triggered a forensic investigation after preliminary findings suggested the animals may have been poisoned.
The lions died on September 18, 2026, in Ndutu, Endulen Ward, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) said in a statement issued on Saturday.
The authority said initial findings pointed to poisoning as a possible cause of death, but stressed that investigations were still underway to establish what happened.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that these animals may have died as a result of poisoning,” NCAA said.
The authority has launched a forensic investigation to determine the source of the suspected poison and establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Hamis Dambaya, Acting Manager of the Public Relations Unit at NCAA, said further details would be released once the investigation is completed.
The authority has not disclosed the substance suspected to have caused the deaths or indicated whether any individuals have been linked to the incident.
The deaths highlight the challenges of protecting wildlife in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where lions are an important part of the ecosystem and among the wildlife species that attract visitors to the area.
NCAA said it would provide more information to the public after the investigation is concluded.
