Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi has arrived in New York to represent President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81), where global leaders are discussing international cooperation amid major geopolitical, economic and technological changes.

Mr Ndejembi arrived at John F Kennedy International Airport and was received by Tanzania’s Ambassador to the United States Elsie Kanza, Tanzania’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York Togolani Mavura and other officials.

The UNGA session brings together heads of state, government leaders and senior representatives of member states for discussions on issues ranging from economic development and international peace to climate change and human rights.

This year’s meeting is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”

The theme places emphasis on rebuilding confidence in multilateral cooperation while addressing rapid global changes, including advances in artificial intelligence (AI).

During his visit, Mr Ndejembi is expected to deliver Tanzania’s statement to the General Assembly and participate in the General Debate and other high-level meetings.

He is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with representatives of other countries and participate in side meetings on issues of mutual interest.

The General Assembly provides Tanzania with a platform to outline its priorities on international cooperation while engaging other countries on economic, social, environmental and development issues.

Mr Ndejembi’s attendance follows Tanzania’s continued participation in multilateral forums, where the country has sought to strengthen international partnerships and advance its development interests.
