The government has stepped up efforts to expand and improve livestock grazing areas as part of measures to promote sustainable livestock keeping and reduce pressure on land resources.
The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries says it is intensifying education for livestock keepers on the sustainable use of grazing land, pasture production and conservation, animal health and the adoption of technologies aimed at raising productivity.
Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Ng’wasi Damas Kamani told Parliament on Friday, September 4, 2026, that the government had also set aside TZS 1 billion in the 2026/27 budget to train extension officers on new technologies and techniques for livestock production and marketing.
He was responding to a question from Bububu MP Salum Khamis Salim, who wanted to know what plans the government had to educate livestock keepers and increase grazing areas in line with the growing number of animals.
Mr Kamani said improving access to extension services was critical to helping livestock keepers adopt better production methods and make more effective use of available grazing resources.
The ministry has also established a Customer Service Centre to receive and address challenges raised by livestock keepers, while providing information, advice and education on livestock-related services.
The government is simultaneously working to increase the amount of land formally designated for grazing.
During the 2025/26 financial year, the ministry, working with the National Land Use Planning Commission and local government authorities, set aside 196,324.25 hectares in 187 villages across 22 districts.
The allocation forms part of a wider government plan to set aside 2.53 million hectares for livestock grazing by 2030.
The move is expected to improve land-use planning and provide livestock keepers with more secure grazing areas, particularly as competition for land between livestock keeping, farming and other economic activities continues to grow.
The government says combining planned grazing areas with better extension services, pasture management, animal health and modern production technologies will be key to improving livestock productivity and making the sector more sustainable.
