The Ministry of Energy and Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) are implementing directives issued by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals to address electricity supply challenges facing the mining sector.
Committee Chairperson Subira Mgalu said cooperation between the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Minerals had enabled progress towards improving reliable electricity supply to small-, medium- and large-scale mining operations.
Mgalu made the remarks on September 3, 2026, in Dodoma during the signing of a contract for construction of the 220-kilovolt (kV) Mponvu–GGM transmission line and a power substation at the Geita Gold Mining (GGM) area in Geita.
She said the committee was satisfied with the implementation of its directives, particularly measures aimed at ensuring reliable electricity for mining activities.
“We are encouraged to see the directives we issued during the committee meeting being implemented. Cooperation between the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Minerals has enabled this major step towards providing reliable electricity to mining areas through a project worth more than Sh63 billion,” Mgalu said.
She recalled the committee’s visit to the Mponvu substation in Geita on March 15, 2026, where members, together with Deputy Minister for Energy Salome Makamba, inspected government investment of more than Sh50 billion in electricity infrastructure under the Sixth Phase Government.
Mgalu said the construction of the new 220kV transmission line would improve the reliability of electricity supplied to GGM and support more efficient mining operations.
“Reliable electricity will help mines operate efficiently, increase production and ultimately contribute to economic growth through the mining sector,” she said.
She also noted the role of TANESCO and its Board of Directors in ongoing efforts to improve electricity services across the country, citing the utility’s slogan, “Tunaangaza Maisha Yako” (We Light Up Your Life).
According to Mgalu, improving the reliability of electricity supply is essential to supporting industrial development and achieving Tanzania’s long-term economic objectives under Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050.
The Mponvu–GGM project is expected to strengthen electricity transmission infrastructure in the Geita mining area and support the growing demand for reliable power from mining and other economic activities.
