Deputy Minister for Energy Salome Makamba has called on the Petroleum Bulk Procurement Agency (PBPA) to step up public education on its mandate and the role it plays in ensuring a reliable supply of petroleum products in the country.
Ms Makamba made the call yesterday during a visit to the PBPA pavilion at Dimbani Grounds in Kizimkazi, where exhibitions are being held as part of the Kizimkazi Festival 2026.
She said greater public understanding of the Bulk Procurement System was necessary, particularly as the system plays a key role in coordinating petroleum imports and supporting security of supply.
“Citizens need to understand the role of PBPA and how the Bulk Procurement System works in ensuring the country has adequate petroleum products,” she said.
The Deputy Minister also commended PBPA for its performance in executing its mandate and contributing to the availability of fuel in the domestic market.
During the visit, PBPA Fuel Inspector Issa Mwitazy said the agency was continuing to ensure sufficient petroleum stocks were available to meet market demand.
He said PBPA's participation in the Kizimkazi Festival had provided an important platform to engage with citizens and stakeholders and explain how the Bulk Procurement System operates.
“The exhibition has given us an opportunity to educate the public about our responsibilities and explain how the Bulk Procurement System works,” Mr Mwitazy said.
He added that PBPA continued to work closely with the Zanzibar Utilities Regulatory Authority (ZURA) on matters related to the petroleum sector.
The Kizimkazi Festival 2026, the third edition of the annual event, is being held from August 12 to 14 in Zanzibar under the theme “Kizimkazi 2026, Opportunities and Celebration.”
The festival seeks to promote development opportunities, business and investment while bringing together various stakeholders to showcase products, services and initiatives.
