President Samia Suluhu Hassan has accepted the resignation of Vice President Emmanuel John Nchimbi, setting in motion the process for appointing his successor.

A statement issued by Chief Secretary Ambassador Moses M. Kusiluka on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, said President Samia received Nchimbi’s letter requesting to step down from the position, effective September 4, 2026.

The President accepted the request, the statement said.

“Procedures for obtaining a new Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania will be undertaken,” the statement said, without providing details on the possible successor or the timeline for the appointment.

Nchimbi’s resignation marks a significant change in the country’s top leadership and leaves the President with the task of selecting a new holder of one of the Union Government’s most senior constitutional offices.

The Vice President serves as the principal assistant to the President and has constitutional responsibilities in the functioning of the Union Government.

The statement did not disclose the reasons behind Nchimbi’s decision to step down.

The announcement is expected to draw attention to the President’s choice of successor, particularly as the government prepares for the transition following Nchimbi’s departure on September 4.

More details on the appointment process and the next Vice President are expected to be announced in due course.
