Farmers in Tanzania’s Central Zone are benefiting from digital financial services provided by Mixx by Yas through cooperative societies, allowing them to receive payments for their produce more quickly and securely while earning rewards for using the services.
Speaking during the Vuna na Mixx event held alongside the Nane Nane Agricultural Exhibitions in Dodoma on August 7, Tanzania Cooperative Development Commission (TCDC) Executive Director Dr Benson Ndiege said the partnership between TCDC and Mixx was helping transform how farmers receive payments under the Warehouse Receipt System.
Dr Ndiege said the adoption of digital payments had helped address some of the challenges associated with cash transactions, including delays in receiving payments and the risks involved in handling large amounts of money.
“When farmers receive their payments on time, they are motivated to increase production. We have seen significant improvements within the cooperative system, as well as increased crop production, supported by the continued improvement of these services,” he said.
He urged farmers already using digital payment services to act as ambassadors in their communities by encouraging other farmers to embrace digital financial services.
Dr Ndiege also commended cooperative officers and leaders of Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) for educating farmers on how to effectively use digital financial services.
Mixx Central Zone Commercial Manager Charles Gasper said the company would continue working with the Government and cooperative societies to expand farmers’ access to secure, convenient and efficient financial services.
“We believe that when we empower a farmer, the benefits extend beyond the individual to their family, community and ultimately the national economy,” Mr Gasper said.
He added that Mixx would continue working with stakeholders across the agricultural sector to ensure more farmers benefit from its digital financial services.
The event also saw more than 25 farmers from the Central Zone rewarded for their continued use of Mixx services through their cooperative societies.
The prizes included motorcycles, a three-wheel cargo vehicle, bicycles and mobile phones, recognising farmers who have embraced digital financial services as part of their agricultural activities.
The Vuna na Mixx initiative forms part of the company’s broader efforts to promote financial inclusion among farmers by working with cooperatives to make agricultural payments safer, faster and more accessible.
The initiative also reflects the growing role of digital financial services in agricultural value chains, particularly as farmers increasingly depend on formal payment systems to access proceeds from the sale of their produce.
