Tanzania has opened discussions with the leadership of the world-famous Cannes Film Festival aimed at boosting the country’s participation in the global film industry and creating new opportunities for local filmmakers.
The talks were held in France, where Tanzania’s Ambassador to France, Saidi Yakubu, met senior officials of the festival to explore ways of increasing Tanzania’s visibility at the annual event starting from 2027.
He was accompanied by Tanzanian film producer and director Jigar Ganatra, who brings extensive international experience in film production and industry collaboration.
During the meetings, the Tanzanian delegation engaged with senior Cannes officials including François Desrousseaux, responsible for international relations, and Guillaume Esmiol, who oversees the Cannes Film Market.
The discussions focused on practical steps to strengthen Tanzania’s participation in the festival and the wider film market.
Key proposals included the establishment of a Tanzania pavilion, increased participation of local filmmakers and actors, training opportunities for young creatives, and stronger international partnerships in film production.
Ambassador Yakubu noted that the film industry has strong potential to contribute to economic growth, create jobs for young people, and support tourism promotion.
He added that the embassy will continue working closely with partners in France and Europe to open up investment opportunities in Tanzania’s creative and film sector.
The Cannes Film Festival is one of the world’s most influential film platforms, bringing together industry professionals from more than 140 countries every year.
