Sokoine University of Agriculture has launched 12 new research projects worth TZS3.4 billion in a move expected to strengthen agricultural innovation, environmental protection and community development in Tanzania.
The projects were unveiled during the university’s 47th graduation ceremony, where 877 students graduated with various academic qualifications, including bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees and PhDs.
Speaking during the ceremony, SUA Vice Chancellor Raphael Chibunda said the new projects are designed to generate practical solutions to challenges facing agriculture, livestock, natural resources and rural livelihoods.
He said the launch of the projects has increased the number of ongoing research initiatives at the university to 130 across different regions of the country, reflecting the institution’s growing role in supporting national development through research and innovation.
Prof. Chibunda noted that the university continues to promote the application of research findings in shaping government policies and development programmes.
“The university remains committed to ensuring that research outputs contribute directly to solving societal and national challenges. During this reporting period, we launched 12 new projects worth TZS3.4 billion,” he said.
The graduation ceremony was officiated by SUA Chancellor and former Prime Minister Joseph Warioba, who awarded degrees to the graduates.
Chairperson of the SUA University Council, Andrew Masawe, said the institution has continued implementing strategic measures aimed at improving the university’s academic environment and infrastructure.
He said the council is also closely monitoring financial management and implementation of the university’s budget for the 2025/2026 financial year to ensure efficiency and accountability.
Masawe further revealed that the university has intensified construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure using internally generated revenue, with several projects progressing well.
“The council has continued receiving implementation reports on various development projects, for which a total of TZS59.6 billion has been allocated,” he said.
He added that continued investment in infrastructure and research demonstrates the university’s commitment to becoming a leading centre of excellence in agricultural education, research and innovation in Africa.
University leaders also challenged the graduates to use the knowledge and skills gained at SUA to contribute to the transformation of Tanzania’s agriculture sector and broader economic growth.
