More than 3 million drivers across Tanzania were subjected to legal action after being found guilty of violating road safety regulations during the 2025/26 financial year, as authorities intensified efforts to reduce road accidents, deaths, and injuries.
A total of 3,051,541 drivers were cautioned, fined, prosecuted in courts, or had their driving licences suspended as part of nationwide enforcement measures implemented by the government through the road safety strategy.
The figures were presented in Parliament in Dodoma on Monday, May 25, 2026, by the Minister for Home Affairs, Patrobas Katambi, while tabling the ministry’s budget estimates for the 2026/27 financial year.
He said the government will continue strengthening enforcement of traffic laws through the Tanzania Police Force, including increased patrols on major highways, strict action against offenders, and expanded public education campaigns on road safety.
Katambi said the focus is to ensure that all road users comply with traffic regulations in order to reduce preventable accidents, which continue to pose a challenge on public safety and economic productivity.
He emphasized that enforcement will go hand in hand with awareness creation, targeting drivers, pedestrians, and transport operators to promote responsible use of roads.
“The Tanzania Police Force will continue to enforce road traffic laws effectively through patrols, taking appropriate legal action against offenders, and educating the public on safe road use,” he said.
In another development, the Minister informed Parliament on the ministry’s contribution through police participation in international peacekeeping operations outside the country.
He said Tanzanian police officers have been deployed in peace support missions in Sudan, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where they have contributed to stabilisation efforts and protection of civilians.
According to him, participation in such missions has also helped strengthen the professionalism, discipline, and operational skills of officers, while enhancing Tanzania’s reputation in regional and international peace and security cooperation.
