The Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Ambassador Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, has commended the Non-Governmental Organization INADES for successfully organizing the national Donkey Day celebrations held on May 8, 2026, in Geita Region.
Dr. Bashiru gave the commendation on May 20, 2026, in Dar es Salaam when he met the Executive Director of INADES, Ms. Jacqueline Nicodemus, who visited his office to present a brief report on the implementation of the event.
He said the government appreciates partners who support public service delivery and community awareness in a transparent and responsible manner, noting that such cooperation strengthens efforts to improve animal welfare and livelihoods in rural communities.
The Minister further encouraged INADES to work with the Ministry in translating the donkey welfare guideline into Kiswahili to make it easier for more citizens to understand and apply it.
He noted that the current version is only available in English, which limits access for many people who rely on donkeys for transport and daily economic activities.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continue working with stakeholders in improving the welfare of working animals, which play an important role in supporting household incomes, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.
On her part, Ms. Nicodemus thanked the Government of Tanzania through the Ministry for Livestock and Fisheries for its support, which contributed to the success of the national celebrations.
She said the event helped raise public awareness on the importance of donkeys, provided veterinary services, and encouraged communities in Geita and other parts of the country to take better care of the animals.
She added that continued collaboration with the government will help strengthen education and outreach on animal welfare and ensure more sustainable use and protection of donkeys in Tanzania.
