The Government has said a total of 126 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) were registered in Tanzania between July 2025 and April 2026, reflecting continued efforts to strengthen civic participation and promote good governance in the country.
Out of the registered organisations, 12 are religious-based while 114 are non-religious organisations, showing the diversity and growing role of civic groups in supporting development and social services.
The figures were presented today in Parliament in Dodoma by the Minister of Home Affairs, Patrobas Katambi, when he tabled the Ministry’s budget speech for the 2026/27 financial year.
Minister Katambi said during the same period, the Ministry conducted inspections on 350 civil society organisations to ensure compliance with registration laws and to assess their contribution to national development.
He explained that the inspections were part of ongoing government efforts to strengthen accountability, improve transparency, and ensure that CSOs operate in line with national laws while contributing effectively to development priorities.
The Minister added that the Government has also implemented special engagement programmes aimed at improving knowledge and strengthening leadership capacity among CSO leaders across the country.
Through these programmes, a total of 2,500 leaders from both religious and non-religious organisations were trained on proper organisational management, legal compliance, and the importance of promoting peace, unity, and national cohesion.
Katambi said the trainings are designed to build stronger institutions that can effectively support government efforts in delivering development to citizens at all levels.
He further told Parliament that the Ministry has allocated 1.57 billion shillings for the supervision and coordination of civil society organisations in the 2026/27 financial year.
According to the Government, the investment will strengthen oversight systems, improve coordination, and enhance the overall performance of civil society organisations in contributing to national development goals.
