Tanzania, Comoros explore trade opportunities after TanTrade talks

By The Respondents Reporter

A former Finance Minister and former Speaker of Comoros, Said A. Mchangama, has held discussions with officials from the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) aimed at strengthening trade relations and expanding business opportunities between Tanzania and Comoros.

The meeting reviewed recent trade performance between the two countries, highlighting a notable imbalance.

Data shows that between 2023 and 2025, Tanzania exported goods worth $48.85 million to Comoros, while imports from Comoros stood at just $0.014 million. The gap signals both a dominance of Tanzanian exports and room for growth in bilateral trade.

Mchangama pointed to a range of products with strong export potential in the Comorian market, including cotton, furniture, beverages, plastic products, fruits and vegetables, rice and edible oils.

He said improving trade flows would require stronger linkages between businesses, as well as more structured engagement between the two markets.

Officials from TanTrade outlined ongoing efforts to support exporters through trade promotion platforms, business matchmaking and market intelligence, aimed at helping Tanzanian firms access regional markets more effectively.

The discussions form part of wider efforts by Tanzania to expand its export base and deepen economic ties within the Indian Ocean region, with a focus on increasing trade volumes and improving market access for local producers.
