The Government has taken another decisive step in advancing Tanzania’s aviation sector following the official launch of Sumbawanga Airport, a development widely described as a catalyst for economic growth in the Rukwa Region and neighboring areas.
The airport officially commenced operations on April 24, 2026, opening a new gateway of opportunities for citizens and investors alike.
Launching the facility on behalf of the Minister of Transport, Makame Mbarawa, the Deputy Minister for Transport, David Kihenzile, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to continued investment in aviation infrastructure to improve services, enhance regional connectivity, and expand economic opportunities.
“The inauguration of this airport reflects the Government’s strong commitment to strengthening the aviation sector. We are opening doors for development by ensuring accessible, reliable, and quality transport services for our people,” said Kihenzile.
He noted that the airport will unlock multiple economic opportunities, particularly in trade, tourism, and investment, while serving as a vital link connecting Rukwa with other regions.
On his part, the Director General of the Tanzania Airports Authority, Abdul Mombokaleo, stated that the construction of the airport cost TZS 62.1 billion and incorporates modern infrastructure designed to meet both current and future demands.
“The project includes a runway, a passenger terminal with the capacity to handle up to 150,000 passengers annually, as well as essential meteorological services,” explained Mombokaleo.
Meanwhile, the Director General of Air Tanzania Company Limited, Peter Ulanga, announced that the airline is set to introduce scheduled flights to Sumbawanga twice a week, a move expected to ease the movement of passengers and cargo.
“These services will significantly boost trade, tourism, and investment in Rukwa and surrounding regions,” said Ulanga.
Delivering regional remarks, the Acting Regional Commissioner of Rukwa, who also serves as the Regional Administrative Secretary, Msalike Makungu, emphasized the transformative impact of the project.
“This strategic investment will unlock vast economic opportunities and accelerate social development for the people of Rukwa,” he stated.
Overall, the launch of Sumbawanga Airport is more than just an infrastructure milestone. It marks the ignition of a new economic engine, poised to propel Rukwa and the wider western corridor into a broader landscape of trade, investment, and national developsment.
