Rising fuel prices are not politics CCM clarifies

By Carlos Claudio, Dodoma

The Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has called on the government to take swift and decisive measures to protect citizens’ economic well-being following the continued rise in fuel prices both locally and globally.

Speaking to journalists on April 7, 2026, in Dodoma, CCM’s Secretary for Ideology, Publicity, and Training, Amos Kihongosi, said the party is proposing the introduction of fuel subsidies as well as the establishment of a special energy fund to help cushion the impact of fluctuating fuel prices.

He explained that the proposed fund would aim to reduce the burden of global fuel price increases and help stabilize their effects on citizens and the national economy at large.

CCM also urged the government to promote the use of alternative energy sources and reduce dependence on fuel in both public and private sector offices, as a way of enhancing resilience during energy-related challenges.

In addition, Kihongosi emphasized the importance of maintaining a strategic fuel reserve to ensure consistent availability, even during disruptions in the global market.

He further called on the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) to effectively oversee the petroleum sector, prevent malpractice, enhance transparency, and ensure reliable and efficient fuel supply.

Moreover, he stressed the need to strengthen investment in fuel storage infrastructure and expand fuel distribution stations in collaboration with the private sector to improve nationwide supply.

On energy policy, Kihongosi noted that the government should consider providing fuel subsidies while continuing to promote alternative energy sources, particularly natural gas, to reduce reliance on imported fuel.

He also proposed the creation of a dedicated fund to support oil exploration and production within the country, aimed at ensuring long-term energy security.

In conclusion, Kihongosi urged Tanzanians to understand that rising fuel prices are a global challenge rather than a political issue, noting that while there are calls to reduce certain levies, taxes remain essential for financing national development.
