By The Respondents Reporter

Prof. Penina Mlama, Chairperson of the National Mwalimu Nyerere Creative Writing Awards Committee, has revealed the list of nominees for this year’s awards, ahead of the ceremony set for April 13, 2026, at Superdom Masaki, Dar es Salaam.

The winners were selected from a record 260 manuscripts submitted by participants from across Tanzania, including new entrants from abroad.

Prof. Mlama described the high number of submissions as a strong indicator of growing enthusiasm among writers to advance Swahili literature and promote creative writing nationwide.

“The overwhelming response this year reflects the passion of our writers and their commitment to enriching Swahili literature,” Prof. Mlama said.

Winners in each category will be officially announced during the ceremony and will receive cash prizes, certificates, and other awards.

The first-place winner will have their manuscript published, with the government purchasing copies for schools and national libraries to encourage reading and nurture creative talent across the country.

“The award not only recognizes talent but also ensures that creative works reach a wider audience, inspiring the next generation of writers,” Prof. Mlama added.
