Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan has launched 758 telecommunication towers across the country, alongside the expansion of the National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) to 85 districts, in a major push aimed at strengthening Tanzania’s digital economy and expanding access to communication services.

The launch ceremony, held at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre, also featured the official handover of key communication infrastructure to the government.

President Samia said the investment marks a significant step in accelerating digital transformation, noting that connectivity is now a central pillar for economic growth, investment, and improved delivery of public services, especially in rural and border areas.

She stressed that modern communication is no longer a luxury but a necessity for development, creating opportunities for employment, business expansion, and innovation among citizens.

President Samia directed the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to ensure that remaining districts are quickly connected to the NICTBB network and that services are extended to lower administrative levels to widen access.

She also instructed local government authorities to reduce delays in approving communication projects, warning that bureaucratic bottlenecks increase investment costs and slow down service delivery.

In addition, she emphasized the need to protect communication infrastructure as a strategic national asset vital for both economic stability and national security.

She further called for all communication services to uphold Tanzanian ethics, traditions, and cultural values while promoting innovation and youth empowerment.

The Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Angellah Kairuki, said the achievements reflect strong collaboration between government, the private sector, and development partners.

She noted that ongoing efforts are focused on expanding ICT infrastructure, supporting digital innovation, and strengthening technology startups to enhance economic growth and service delivery.

Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation Director General CPA Moremi Marwa said the National ICT Broadband Backbone has now reached 121 out of 139 districts in mainland Tanzania, significantly improving both domestic and international connectivity.

Representing service providers, Yas Tanzania Chief Executive Officer Pierre Canton-Bacara said the private sector remains committed to working with the government to expand digital infrastructure, while calling for continued review of infrastructure costs to boost regional competitiveness and encourage wider data usage.

On the sidelines of the event, President Samia also witnessed the signing of the infrastructure handover agreement for the NICTBB to the government and presented awards to telecommunications companies involved in implementing the projects.
